How To Winterize An Above Ground Pool

However, preparing the pool for winter is a time-taking task, but you should be careful doing it so your efforts don’t go in vain. Don’t follow the misconceptions of winterizing a pool and use the correct method so you can have a fresh pool till the next summer season.

10 Steps on How To Winterize Above Ground Pool?

So let’s get started with the winterizing project for an above ground pool!

Step 1

Are you going to winterize the pool? Wait! But first, you need to balance the temperature of the water. For that, you need to ensure that water is clean and doesn’t have any chemicals in it. More than that, you should add some chemicals to balance the pH level.

In addition to it, you have to maintain the water, so there is no scaling or corrosion build up in the pool. It is crucial to determine the quality of the pool’s water when you aren’t going to use it for a long time. Below we’ll tell you how to balance the chemicals in your water.

  • The pH level should lie from 7.2 to 7.6.
  • The alkaline level should be 80 to 120 parts/ million
  • Calcium hardness in the pool water should be 17 to 250 parts/ million
  • Chlorine should be 1 to 3 parts/ million

These are the pool winterizing chemicals.

Step 2

You have to remove all the pool equipment, such as a ladder, pool bags, toys, and stairs. Wondering that you can leave the above ground pool steps for winter, then it’s not a good idea.

Step 3

Now you have to brush the pool, so there is no dirt left in it. Moreover, you have to vacuum the pool as well. Besides, you should clean and brush the pool, so there are no stains when you open it next year.

Step 4

Moreover, you need to add the right amount of winterizing pool chemicals. Indeed, the chemicals are necessary to add to the water to maintain the quality of water. You have to add the necessary chemicals, so it remains protected until the next summer season.

Step 5

Now you have to add the cleaning filter to the pool. Additionally, you can use the pump basket for removing the unused excessive chemicals from the water. In fact, you have to remove the cartridge elements from the water. For instance, you have to wash the sand filter as well if it is in the pool.

Step 6

Most of the people, while winterizing the pool, use the skimmer guard for cleaning the skimmer. Besides, you can also use it in the lower pool line.

So it depends on your preference. You might think that it is compulsory to remove all the water from an above ground pool. But that’s not true, and you have to keep some water on the pool; otherwise, it will collapse.

Step 7

Furthermore, if there were any hoses attached to the above-ground pool, you have to remove them. Likewise, it is necessary to remove other plugs such as the filter tank, any pumps, and other equipment’s from the pool.

On the other hand, you need to check the instructions given by the pump manufacturer. Remove the pump carefully so you can use it for the next season. Keep all the accessories of your pool in one place so you can easily find them in the summer season.

Besides that, some of the above-ground pools require hard plumbing. For instance, you have to use the air compressor for blowing the water from the skimmer.

Step 8

Next, you have to inflate the air blower. Further, inflation is only possible when you have a shop vac.

Moreover, you have tied the air blower at the two places to remain secure while setting up the cover pool. The pillow should not have a dome shape because rainwater will be absorbed in it.

Step 9

Next, you have to buy a winter cover from your pool. Always place the black side of the pool downwards. Besides that, you have to cover the pool at least 3 feet. Thus there are no accidents if you have pets or kids at home.

Besides that, you have tied the loops of the pool cover tightly. Also, the cover of the pool should be lying on the walls of the pool.

On the other side, you have a pool with a deck; ensure that the water tubes are around the pool’s corners. After that, you have to fill the pool bag with ¾ water. Overfilling the pool bag can cause bursting.

Tip: You should not use the bricks to tighten the cover because it will destroy your pool’s quality.

Step 10

The last step is pretty easy; you have to drain all the water from the pool and cover it properly. For draining the water, you have to put a cover pump in the pool. Furthermore, removing excess water is important because it can ruin the wall bags. Thus, you should avoid the messy cleaning process by using a cover pump.

Final Words
